MENTORS AND MENTORING AT MOUNTAIN CREEK STATE SCHOOL PDF Print E-mail

Dear Staff, Parents and Caregivers,

Can you think of a person other than a family member or teacher who had a big impact on your life? Someone you simply enjoyed talking with. Someone who made you feel that they were in tune with your thoughts and feelings. A person who never really gave you a lot of specific advice but helped you work though things in you own mind so that you that you felt clearer, calmer and more confident and focussed on what you needed to do.

If you have experienced this then you might have been lucky enough to have had an unofficial mentor. Our Student Services team spent some time talking to David Fenton who runs the Mentor Market Place last week. This is a “not for profit” group that trains parents and community members who believe that they might have what it takes to be a good mentor. Not all potential mentors are found suitable for the program and obviously there are exhaustive checks completed on all volunteers as part of the training process. More importantly the Mentor networks he has created have been of great value to many students in schools across the Sunshine Coast.

We were so impressed that we intend to start a mentor program for students at Mountain Creek State School. It already runs successfully across the road at the High School. Early next term we are having a special briefing session for all parent and community members who might like to assist our school in this very special way. If you would like to know more, use the link provided (www.youthmentoring.com.au), or more importantly fill out the return slip with your details so that we can send you a personal invitation to our information night. Please give it some thought as we desperately need a strong group of trained volunteers to make this work successfully.

We finally have dates for our postponed sports days:

YEARS 5-7 - 2nd and 3rd sessions Friday 19 June
PREPs - 1st session Monday 22 June
YEARS 3 & 4 - 1st and 2nd sessions Tuesday 23 June
YEARS 1 & 2 - 1st and 2nd sessions Thursday 25 June

This will be a fun way of finishing the term. I hope you can come and join us. Thanks for all your help and support again this term. Special congratulations to all teachers, volunteers and parents who came along with their children for Under 8’s day. It was one of most successful days ever.

Don’t forget that report cards will be sent home on Friday 26 June. Interviews will be offered to all parents in week 2 of next term.

This will be the last news item before the school holidays, so have a wonderful break with your children.

Warm Regards,
Glenn.
