We have been celebrating some more success this week at school with two of our Futsal Teams (Under 10 boys and Open boys) taking out the “Champion Of Champions” Trophy and our open girls team also doing extremely well. I would like to thank Dave Hooper for giving up so much of his time again this year, to inspire and motivate our young stars to be the very best they can be, but also to play and enjoy the game in the spirit that we are all proud of. I would also like to thank the parents who also volunteered their time to assist with training and to transport students to the games.
We also have two state representatives in our midst. Congratulations to Jacob (Football – soccer) and Joshua (Touch Football) and their families for this outstanding achievement. Both boys will be attending Australian Championships in Adelaide. Best of luck boys!
On an entirely different topic, I would like to encourage you to talk to your sons and daughters about their activities on the web. While all young people who are growing into young men and women need a certain amount of trust and privacy, I would encourage you to help provide some safety for our children by having open and honest discussion about some of the traps and pitfalls of instant digital communication. I came across this article from a colleague at Siena Catholic College and thought it summed up the situation very well.
CYBER SAFETY - IMAGES ON THE WEB: Following on from our topic of a couple of weeks ago, today’s article looks at the risks associated with placing pictures/videos on the Web. People (adults and children) commonly place images of themselves and friends onto the internet through social networking pages such as Facebook and My Space, as well as video images on YouTube. Many don’t take the time to stop and think of potential risks associated with this. Aside from the obvious risk of viewing by paedophiles, there are other less obvious dangers associated with this practice. Firstly, there have been several documented cases where an estranged parent, with no access to the children, has been able to use the images to piece together sufficient information to allow them to locate the child in question. Secondly, from a legal aspect you need to ensure you have the permission of all people in the image before posting, due to privacy concerns. Finally, it is becoming a much more common practice for companies and recruitment agencies to conduct searches for all images associated with job applicants. Depending on the type of image unearthed, your job prospects could be seriously harmed by one or two foolish photos or videos. Remember too, that deleting them from these sites does not offer protection, as the myriad of archiving websites allow them to access images that were previously on these sites as well. Just think before posting!! Mrs Anne Fenwick
