At Mountain Creek State School we have a very active chess club that meets on Wednesday mornings at 7.50am in Deltora Den (attached to the library). Chess runs from Week Two to Week Nine each term. Chess is a great activity that helps improve children’s concentration, problem-solving, critical, original and creative thinking and mathematical skills. It also helps with memory storage and how young brains manage information. It’s also a great way to start the school day.
We are supported by our excellent tutors Tony and Tulia Powell, who have extensive experience both playing and coaching chess. Students with any level of ability are welcome to come along. Tony and Tulia give specific feedback to students as needed but also teach mini lessons to groups of students that are at a similar level.
At MCSS we host The Sunshine Coast Individual Age Chess Championships each year. Students compete against other schools on the Sunshine Coast. In 2022 there were 240 students who participated in the tournament. Sunshine Coast Grammar School also hosts a teams Chess tournament later in the school year.
If you are interested in learning to play Chess, students are invited to call in to Deltora Den on a Wednesday morning and check it out.
