Mountain Creek State School supports and encourages students to develop a lifelong love of reading. We have an extensive array of resources and reading materials available for students and teachers; are active participants in literacy initiatives such as ‘The Premiers Reading Challenge’; support students to grow and improve their reading and confidence skills with programs such as ‘Story Dogs’ and ‘Support A Reader’; and celebrate our love of reading with CBCA Book Week and National Simultaneous Storytime activities.

Class Times
Classes visit our library each week for a timetabled session with their classroom teacher to share a story and access our library collection. A library bag is required for Prep and Year 1 students and is optional for all other year levels. Using our library is seen as an invaluable experience for our students to not only access reading materials, but to also practice skills such as being organised, caring for items that belong to someone else, and how to behave in different environments within our school. Students enjoy the calmness our library provides, and in addition to class visits are welcome to attend before school and at second break (lunchtime).

Students in Year 5 and 6 can access our Senior Fiction section. Books in this area include picture books, graphic novels, and chapter books. These reading materials have content, vocabulary, pictures and artwork aimed at our older readers.
Students can loan items for a period of two weeks and can renew items if required for longer. If an item is kept longer than the two weeks without renewal, it is considered overdue, and borrowing rights are limited until the book is returned. Lost books incur a $10 (minimum) fee, with an invoice issued through the office. This is used to cover a replacement book for our library.

Scholastics Book Club
Our library holds a Book Fair (alternate years) for students and staff to purchase books, and delivers two issues of Scholastic Book Club each term. Our school receives a commission from our student purchases which we are able to use to buy new books and resources for our library.

Library Assistants
Year 6 students can apply to be Library Assistants and work in the library during lunchtime in order to achieve their Leadership Badge. They gain experience operating the library computer, assisting younger students with their library needs, and helping with tasks such as shelving and sorting of books.
