Positive Behaviour for Learning

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school approach to creating a safe and supportive environment that has a strong evidence-base and is used in many Queensland State Schools. It uses preventative, teaching and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve meaningful and durable behaviour outcomes.

We encourage children to:
  • make good choices;
  • take responsibility for their Behaviour; and
  • develop effective communication skills for positive participation in society.

PBL is a 3-Tiered Approach to Prevention

PBL provides a model of support for all students, consisting of three tiers of intervention. The tiers represent levels of intervention and do not represent students. Tier 1, or universal interventions, are the critical foundation for PBL.
Interventions are at the whole-school level and are provided to all students across Academic, emotional and behavioural domains.

PBL at Mountain Creek State School
PBL was introduced at Mountain Creek State School many years ago but has been undergoing a revamp since the beginning of 2024 with a real push for PBL in the Sunshine Coast region. It is our school’s approach of explicitly teaching students acceptable behaviour. Our PBL team meets regularly to review a variety of data, evaluate school systems and implement change.

What are the PBL guiding principles?

  • Teaching expected behaviours through explicit instruction, with opportunities for students to practise behaviour and get feedback.
  • Prevention to try and avoid more serious behaviour problems.
  • A team that works together and uses data to make decisions about behaviour interventions.
  • A clear and consistent approach to how we encourage expected behaviour and discourage misbehaviour.

Why is PBL important at Mountain Creek State School?

  • To increase teaching time and improve academic outcomes.
  • To reduce rates of inappropriate behaviour across the school.
  • To ensure consistent management of inappropriate behaviours.
  • To improve the positive feeling (culture) of the school and classrooms.

What are our overlying Creeker Rules?

  • We are Safe
  • We are Respectful
  • We are Responsible
  • We are Learners

Postive Behaviour 4 Learning Matrix

PBL’s framework ensures that Mountain Creek has set the expectations using the Positive Behaviour for Learning Matrix, and that teachers provide explicit instruction on what the required behaviours look and sound like and work as part of the whole staff team to model the standards.

This Matrix is in every classroom and elements are around different parts of the school for a visual reminder to students and community of our school wide expectations.

Focus Posters

Focus posters are used each fortnight. Each fortnight there is a focus which is determined by staff through looking at current behaviour data and feedback from staff and students. Lessons are based on these fortnightly focus and staff are actively acknowledging these positive behaviours displayed.

Creeker

A variety of Creekers can be seen around our school and in our PBL lessons. Creeker is our school mascot and tries to help our students make great positive behaviour decisions.

Our Positive Behaviour acknowledgement system

We strive to create a safe, supportive and disciplined environment at Mountain Creek State School, to improve student academic and behavioural outcomes. We implement a Positive Behaviour for Learning whole school approach which uses preventative, teaching and reinforcement-based strategies to achieve positive behaviour outcomes. This provides immediate and purposeful feedback to our students for engaging in expected school behaviour. This reinforcement and acknowledgement system is designed to increase the quantity and quality of positive interactions between students, staff and home.

Children’s positive choices are acknowledged through a variety of ways including, but not limited to:
